“Rule of Thum”
8th Annual
Fall Into Art Exhibit
November 1-22
Howard Steamboat Museum
Special Presentations November 1, 7, 8 & 15

The Howard Steamboat Museum's annual Fall Into Art exhibit in November will feature works by Patty Thum (1853-1926). This turn-of-the-century Louisville painter and illustrator was known internationally for her flower paintings. Our upcoming exhibition, the first devoted to this artist in decades, will run from November 1 until 22 and will include landscapes and still lifes in oil and watercolor, as well as drawings and period prints. A catalog with full-color photos of her art and essays on her life and impact on the Aesthetic Movement will be available for purchase at the museum gift shop.

Estill Curtis Pennington, Tom Owen, Lynn Renau and Madeline Covi will will speak at 2:30 on November 1, 7th, 8th, and 15th respectively. Following Mrs. Covi’s talk on November 15th, attendees are encouraged to bring their Thum paintings for a “Show & Tell” session where stories about Miss Thum and her work can be shared.

Louisville born and a descendant of a distinguished Virginia family (as well as being the daughter of a Confederate surgeon), Miss Thum was an independent thinker who graduated from Vassar College in 1874, set up an art studio, exhibited in regional expositions and sold her paintings for commercial purposes. From the Victorian period through the 1920s she had a national audience thanks to popular lithographic reproductions of her flower paintings. She also helped determine the city’s artistic agenda through her writings about art, primarily as a critic for the Louisville Herald. She studied art at Vassar and then with William Merritt Chase and later with Thomas Eakins.

Two hands-on painting workshops will be held in November that relate to the subject matter of many of many of Patty Thum's paintings. On Saturday, November 7, from 10AM to 12:30PM, artist Liang Rong will demonstrate flora painting. On Saturday, November 21, from 10AM to 12:30PM, artist Ron Colman will demonstrate the painting of animals.
