Capt. Bates is well known as a
marine architect and the author of many fine river books, including Belle of Louisville, The
Western Rivers Steamboat Cyclopoedium,
Moonlite at
8:30, McBride's River and The Western Rivers Engineroom Cyclopoedium,
etc.
Alan also
"resurrected"
the Str. AVALON into the BELLE OF LOUISVLLE
was designer of the Str. NATCHEZ, and
served as the first president of the Howard Steamboat Museum when it opened in 1958.
