On Saturday, March 14th, the Howard Steamboat Museum opened the Spring into Art Art Show in the Carriage House on the grounds of the museum. Between now and March 27th, the show is offering an exhibit of 120 pieces of work (paintings, sculpture, and tapestry) created by Adult, Teen and Child Artists who live within a 50-mile radius of the museum.

After a tough year for everyone with storms and economic concerns, the committee for "Spring into Art" feared that it would not be able to attract enough artwork, especially since this is the first year this exhibit has been offered. However, by the time the two extended deadlines had been reached, artists, both youth and adults, had responded in overwhelming numbers. We had to keep cutting to keep the amount of art works that we accepted down to what we thought would be a manageable number: a total of 120 works: 60 by adults and 60 by teens and children. Artists who entered varied from established artists to first-timers, each with a story to tell about their passion for art.

Frame-It-Fast on 10th St in Jeffersonville helped artists prepare for the exhibit by offered matting and framing workshops. In the carriage house, walls and floors have been scrubbed, painted, and lighted for the arrival of the accepted work. The artists come from close towns like Jeffersonville, Clarksville, New Albany, Floyd's Knobs and Louisville. Others entered from towns further away. In Indiana, Henryville, Greenville, Marysville, Grantsburg, Lanesville, Hanover and Corydon are represented. In Kentucky the towns of Goshen, Frankfort, Crestwood, Shelbyville, and Prospect are represented.

We are really excited to see all this art work and watch it transform our 120 year-old carriage house into an exhibit hall! In addition to awards granted by our judge, "People's Choice" awards will be granted by means of ballots cast by reception attendees.

The Howard Steamboat Museum is 1101 E. Market Street, Jeffersonville, Indiana. For more information, contact Janice Molnar 812-282-2151.
